Community Baseline Survey Data Report Reveals Computer and Broadband Trends

Broadband promises to open new educational and economic opportunities for rural West Virginia, but a new baseline data report of 26 communities shows that only 49% of households subscribe to broadband. Of these broadband users, 21% are using the resource to continue their education and 14% to run home businesses.

Sept.2 Press Event: Fire Departments Open 19 Public Computer Labs in southern West Virginia

Franklin, WV- Nineteen fire departments in southern West Virginia are set to open public computer labs with broadband. To celebrate these new learning centers, the Logan Fire Department will host a regional press conference on September 2. Participants will include Congressman Nick Rahall, WV Director of Homeland Security Jim Gianato, WV Fire Marshall, Sterling Lewis, and community spokespersons. An open house from 7-9pm for the public will feature guest speaker, Chris Lawrence, host of WV Outdoors of WV MetroNews.

Nila Bland

For 40 years, Nila Bland has volunteered to make her community in Pendleton County, West Virginia a more pleasant place to live.  Growing up in Franklin, after she got married Nila moved to Brandywine, home of South Fork Volunteer Fire Department. Nila’s volunteer activities stretch far beyond the fire department though, having served on the Treasure Mountain Festival Association for over 20 years, even serving as its president at one point, volunteering for her church, and for the extension homemakers.
