Ten Fire Departments Celebrate New Computer Centers with Open Houses

In September and October, ten Fire Departments across West Virginia officially opened public computer centers, offering free broadband internet access and learning opportunities to rural residents.

To raise awareness and draw the crowds, fire departments organized festive open houses with concerts, chili cook-offs, guest speakers, bingo, and face painting for kids.

The Future Generations WV Broadband Opportunities Program staff would like to extend their sincere thanks to Pendleton Community Bank for their recent donation of $500 towards the New Relics concert for the opening of the Moorefield Volunteer Fire Department’s public computer center. The grand opening in Moorefield served as the regional grand opening for the computer centers located in the eastern region of the state.

40 Local Computer Mentors Trained

Franklin, WV - In August 2010, the Future Generations Graduate School oriented and trained 40 people from 20 communities across West Virginia to be computer mentors. These individuals, each selected by their local fire departments and communities, will help manage new public computer labs. They will teach basic computer skills classes and facilitate numerous other learning opportunities.
